Kids Corridors Project

Kids Corridors is an Ironwood Tree Experience (ITE) inspired project built upon the foundations of the GreenLots project. Kids Corridors, like Ironwood Tree Experience and GreenLots are all projects of the Center for Children and Nature (CCN) at Prescott College.

The creation of a sustainable community must acknowledge, appreciate and involve all members of the ethno-biological system. The Kids Corridors project seeks to identify and map a system of existing and potential corridors across the Tucson, Arizona urban environment that facilitate the free movement of children to and from public parks and natural spaces in a safe and dependable manner.

Like the GreenLots project Kids Corridors serves the CCN and ITE mission of connecting kids with community through experiences in nature. Both GreenLots and Kids Corridors integrates urban planning and geospatial mapping professionals with children’s  health and wellness theories. Just as biological corridors connect wild plant and animal populations between fragmented habitats, GreenLots and Kids Corridors endeavors to do the same for children in our community. Importantly and fundamentally, every aspect of the Kids Corridor and GreenLots projects involves active input from Tucson Teens involved in the Ironwood Tree Experience EcoPrograms.

Kids Corridors is a dynamic and ongoing project that will submit a bi-annual report to The City of Tucson Mayor and Council, Pima County Board of Supervisors and to Congressional Representatives Districts 7th (Raul Grijalva) and 8th (Gabriel Giffords).

The secondary purpose of the GreenLots and Kids Corridor projects is to initiate and encourage an urban design process that includes children’s health and wellness as a front and center criteria pertaining to planning decisions, and to create a model of an urban planning process that includes input from children and teens.
