The CAT is about strategies, tools and resources that inspire sustainable community action projects in neighborhoods and schools focusing particularly on urban ecology and youth.

The Community Action Toolkit (CAT) targets urban neighborhoods and schools interested in exploring diverse strategies for community engagement. The CAT is geared at the neighborhood or school scale but provides foundational concepts worthy of consideration for larger geographic areas. The CAT advocates a holistic approach to community action projects to increase the likelihood of success and to encourage full participation of neighbors and full representations of community members.

ITE is currently piloting the Community Action Toolkit. We have partnered with 5 neighborhoods and/or schools, providing each partner tools and resources, including $500 in financial support and trained teen Community Action Toolkit Project Specialists, to complete a community action project.

CAT Partners include:

Manzo Elementary

Dunbar-Spring Neighborhood

Coronado Heights Neighborhood

Doolen Middle School

Hedrick Acres Neighborhood

To insure youth voice, job skills and civic participation, ITE recruited teens to serve as Community Action Toolkit Project Specialists for neighborhoods and schools. Teens receive training in community action projects and then team up (in pairs) to work with partners in design, budgeting, implementation and celebration! Teens receive a stipend of $250 per project.
